Henry Fuseli

Henry Fuseli

Henry Fuseli painted the supernatural and the theatrical: nightmares, witches, ghosts and scenes from Shakespeare and Milton, with twisting, exaggerated figures lit by stark light. His work is strange, dramatic and quite unlike anything else in British art of his time.

He was born Johann Heinrich Füssli in Zurich in 1741, was ordained as a minister and then moved to London, where Joshua Reynolds encouraged him to paint. After eight years in Italy studying Michelangelo he settled in London for good. The Nightmare (1781), with a demon crouched on a sleeping woman, made him famous and is in the Detroit Institute of Arts. He became a professor and keeper at the Royal Academy and influenced William Blake. He died in 1825.

Fairy Mab and Huon and Amanda show his literary, dreamlike side.
