Henry Raeburn

Henry Raeburn

Henry Raeburn was Scotland’s leading portrait painter. He painted directly onto the canvas with broad, square brushstrokes and strong light, giving his sitters a frank, lively presence.

Born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, he was apprenticed to a goldsmith and largely taught himself to paint. After two years in Italy he returned to Edinburgh in 1787 and painted the lawyers, landowners, scholars and soldiers of the Scottish Enlightenment, including Walter Scott. He was knighted in 1822 and appointed the King’s Limner for Scotland shortly before his death. The Skating Minister, attributed to him, is in the Scottish National Gallery.

Boy and Rabbit, which he gave to the Royal Academy, and his portraits of officers such as Captain Hay of Spott show his confident brushwork and dramatic lighting.
