John Henry Twachtman

John Henry Twachtman painted some of the quietest pictures in American Impressionism. Snow covered hillsides, a frozen brook, a pool in soft grey light: his colours are pale and close together, and whole canvases seem to breathe out a single mood.

Born in Cincinnati, he studied with Frank Duveneck, then at the Munich Academy and the Académie Julian in Paris. His early work was dark and bold in the Munich manner, but in 1890 he bought a farm in Greenwich, Connecticut, and spent his last decade painting the land around it again and again, especially the waterfall and brook in every season. He taught at the Art Students League, painted often alongside his friend J. Alden Weir, and was a founding member of the Ten American Painters.

His winter scenes are the ones to look at closely: almost all white, yet full of subtle colour.
