Pieter de Bloot

Pieter de Bloot painted the Dutch countryside and the people who lived in it: farmhouses, barn interiors, taverns and rural landscapes with peasants at work or at rest. From time to time he also painted religious subjects, as in Christ in the House of Martha and Mary.
He was born in Rotterdam in 1601 and spent his life there, dying in 1658. His small, earthy landscapes and peasant scenes belong to the tradition of Dutch Golden Age genre painting.
