William Mason Brown

William Mason Brown is best known for his fruit still lifes: apples, peaches, grapes and flowers painted with glossy, sharp-focus detail. Before that he was a landscape painter of the Hudson River School’s second generation, painting autumn woods and quiet rivers.

Born in Troy, New York, around 1828, he studied portraiture with Abel Buell Moore. He moved to Newark, New Jersey, in 1850 and concentrated on landscape, then settled in Brooklyn in 1858 and turned increasingly to still life. He was influenced by Thomas Cole and by the detailed realism of the English Pre-Raphaelites. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design for 31 years and signed his work Wm M Brown. He died in Brooklyn in 1898. His paintings are in the Brooklyn Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Apples and Lilacs and Autumn Reflections show the two halves of his career.
