George Henry Durrie

George Henry Durrie is the painter of the New England winter: snow on farmhouse roofs, sleighs on country roads, woodpiles and grey skies. About two thirds of his known paintings are snow scenes, and they are intimate rather than grand, close views of farm life instead of sweeping vistas.

He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1820 and studied portrait painting with Nathaniel Jocelyn, teaching himself landscape. His pictures reached a huge audience through Currier and Ives, whose print of his Home to Thanksgiving became one of their most popular. He died in New Haven in 1863. His work is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Wadsworth Atheneum.

A Sleigh Ride in the Snow and A Christmas Party are typical: small figures, warm lit windows and a cold, pale sky.
