Adolf Schreyer

Adolf Schreyer was a German painter of horses: Arab riders at full gallop, cavalry in battle, and sleighs pulled through snow. His work is full of movement, with loose, energetic brushwork and dramatic light.
Born in Frankfurt, he studied at the Städel Institute and in Stuttgart and Munich. He travelled widely, including in Hungary, Wallachia, Russia and North Africa, and later lived for years in Paris before returning to Kronberg near Frankfurt. His paintings were eagerly collected in America. The Metropolitan Museum and the Hamburger Kunsthalle hold his work.
The Watering Place and Wallachian Blizzard show his skill with horses in motion and in harsh weather.
