Fromentin

Eugène Fromentin painted North Africa with first hand knowledge: Arab horsemen, falconers, desert camps and white towns under a hard sun. His pictures are known for lively composition, confident handling and brilliant colour, and his horses are especially well drawn.

He was born in La Rochelle in 1820 and studied with the landscape painter Louis Cabat. He travelled to Algeria several times from the 1840s and wrote about it in A Summer in the Sahara. He was also a fine writer: his novel Dominique and his study of Dutch and Flemish painting, The Masters of Past Time, are still read today. He died in 1876.

Arab Falconer and Arab Horsemen Resting show his favourite subjects: riders, horses and the open light of the plains.
