David Teniers the Younger

David Teniers the Younger painted the everyday life of Flemish villages: peasants smoking and drinking in taverns, card players, village fairs and alchemists at work. He also painted a famous series of pictures showing the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm.
Born in Antwerp, he was trained by his father, David Teniers the Elder, and married Anna, a daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder. In 1651 he moved to Brussels as court painter and keeper of the Archduke’s collection. He published the Theatrum Pictorium, the first illustrated catalogue of a painting collection. His work is in the Prado, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Hermitage.
Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in his Gallery shows walls packed with paintings, each one recognisable.
