Dosso Dossi

Dosso Dossi

Dosso Dossi painted strange, poetic pictures full of rich colour, glowing light and dreamy landscapes. His mythologies and allegories are often mysterious, with odd proportions, magical figures and hidden meanings, and they owe a lot to the Venetian painting of Giorgione and Titian.

He was born Giovanni di Niccolò de Luteri around 1489 and from 1514 was court painter to the Este dukes of Ferrara, Alfonso I and Ercole II, for the rest of his life. He often worked with his brother Battista. His Aeneas in the Elysian Fields is in the National Gallery of Canada, the Allegory of Fortune is in the Getty Museum and the Allegory of Music is in the Museo Horne in Florence.

In Allegory of Fortune, look at the woman holding a cornucopia and the man clutching lottery tickets. It captures his mix of allegory and wit. He died in Ferrara in 1542.
