Henry Dearth

Henry Dearth

Henry Golden Dearth painted in two quite different styles. His earlier landscapes are soft, moody and tonal, in muted greens and browns, with little detail and a gentle evening light. After about 1912 he switched to bright, broken colour and thick paint, painting still lifes, portraits and rock pools on the coast of Brittany.

He was born in Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1864 and studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. He kept a house and studio at Montreuil-sur-Mer in northern France, where he painted many of his landscapes, including An Old Church at Montreuil. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Evening Glow and Landscape with Haystacks show his tonal style, while Begonias belongs to the later, more colourful manner. He died in New York in 1918.
