Hugh Bolton Jones

Hugh Bolton Jones painted quiet American countryside: streams, meadows, country lanes and stands of trees, usually empty of people. His pictures are realistic and restful, and he painted the same kind of scene across every season, from spring green to autumn gold.
Born in Baltimore, he studied at the Maryland Institute and took lessons in New York, where he was influenced by the Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church. After travels in Europe he settled in New York in 1881 and painted in Massachusetts, New Jersey and the Berkshires. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian and the Brooklyn Museum.
A Clear Stream and A Country Path in Summer show his typical approach: soft light, a gently winding line into the distance and careful detail in the foliage.
