Abbott Handerson Thayer

Abbott Handerson Thayer

Abbott Handerson Thayer painted ideal figures of women and children, often dressed in white and sometimes with wings, as angels or allegorical figures. His paintings are calm, luminous and quietly spiritual.

Born in Boston, he studied in New York and then in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He settled in Dublin, New Hampshire, where he painted landscapes and figures. He was also a keen naturalist and developed the theory of countershading in animal colouring, which later influenced military camouflage. His work is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Freer Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum.

Angel, a portrait of his daughter Mary with wings, shows his calm, idealised style.
