Robert Reid

Robert Reid painted young women among flowers, in soft pastel colours and bright outdoor light. His pictures are decorative, gentle and full of summer.
Born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, he studied in Boston, at the Art Students League in New York and at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was a founding member of The Ten American Painters, the group of American Impressionists who exhibited together from 1898. He also painted large murals, including decorations for the Library of Congress and the Massachusetts State House. His Her First Born is in the Brooklyn Museum.
A Summer Girl and Girl in Blue Kimono show his taste for pale colour and graceful figures.
