Rudolf Ernst

Rudolf Ernst painted Orientalist interiors with extraordinary detail: tiled mosques, carved wood screens, carpets, brass lamps and figures at prayer or rest. Every surface is carefully described, so his pictures are almost catalogues of Islamic decoration.
He was born in Vienna in 1854, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there and settled in Paris in 1876. He travelled in Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Istanbul to collect material. In later life he also made faience tiles decorated with Oriental designs. He died in Fontenay-aux-Roses near Paris in 1932.
After Prayer and A Moorish Interior are typical of his quiet, highly finished scenes.
