About Japanese Landscape Prints in Oil

Landscape became a leading subject in Japanese woodblock prints in the 1830s. Katsushika Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" (about 1831) shows Mount Fuji small behind a giant wave. Utagawa Hiroshige followed with "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" (1833 to 1834), views along the road between Edo and Kyoto in rain, snow and moonlight.

Hiroshige's "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake" (1857) was later copied in oil by Van Gogh. The originals are small prints, and these are oil paintings based on them.
