Eastman Johnson

Eastman Johnson built his early reputation on portraits in crayon and then spent the middle of his career painting American rural life at the moment it was changing. Maple sugaring in Maine, cranberry pickers on Nantucket, farmhouse interiors with light coming through small windows.

He trained in Düsseldorf and The Hague, where he studied Rembrandt closely enough to be nicknamed the American Rembrandt. That grounding shows in the handling of interior light more than in the subjects.

Several of his Civil War pictures deal directly with slavery and its aftermath, including A Ride for Liberty, which shows a family escaping on horseback. He later returned to portraiture, painting Presidents and businessmen, which paid better and interests people less. The unfinished cranberry pictures, worked and reworked for years, are the most ambitious things he attempted.
