Floris Arntzenius

Floris Arntzenius painted The Hague in wet weather. Busy streets after rain, with reflections on the pavement, umbrellas, carriages and the grey light of a Dutch afternoon are his typical subjects, along with beach scenes at Scheveningen.

He was born in Surabaya, Java, in 1864 and trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam under August Allebé and then at the Antwerp Academy under Charles Verlat. He lived in Amsterdam until 1892 and then settled in The Hague, where he painted for the rest of his life. His watercolours in particular were highly praised, and he won prizes in Munich, Venice, Pittsburgh and Brussels. The Haags Historisch Museum and the Kunstmuseum in The Hague hold his work. He died in The Hague in 1925.

In a picture like Bierkade in Den Haag, look for the reflections. He could suggest a whole street in a few wet strokes.
