Charles Marion Russell

Charlie Russell learned the West by working in it. He arrived in Montana at sixteen, spent eleven years as a wrangler and night herder, and only turned to painting full time once the open range was already closing. That timing shapes everything he made. The cowboys, hunts and Blackfeet camps are painted from memory of something he had watched disappear.
He had no formal training and it shows in the best possible way. The compositions are direct, the storytelling is clear, and the horses are drawn by someone who had spent years around them. He worked in oil, watercolour and modelled small wax figures that were later cast in bronze.
Russell also wrote and illustrated letters, sending friends pen sketches alongside the text. His sympathies toward Native people were unusual for a white artist of his period, and the paintings avoid much of the triumphalism common in Western art of the time.
